We arrived in Ventspils not knowing exactly what to expect from the following weeks. None of us had ever been ESC volunteers before although some had taken part in Erasmus+ Training Courses and Youth Exchanges. For some of the volunteers it was also going to be the longest time away from home ever in a country we barely knew. This made us a bit scared but at the same time excited for what was going to come: making new friends, learning new things and having fun.
The first day we arrived in Ventspils it was pouring and it was very cold but, thankfully, that did not get the mood down. From the first day we arrived, we were welcomed in Ventspils Youth House as if we were already part of it by both the Latvian volunteers and organizers with whom over time we created a little family. Without even knowing us, we were trusted, which was amazing since we were going to live and work in the Youth House itself. We got given freedom to make the Youth House our home for the following weeks and everyone was very helpful and caring all the time making sure we were okay and comfortable.
Working in the festival was great because we did not receive a “no” to our ideas, it was the other way around, we were asked to share our ideas and discuss them with the rest of the team so all the activities were put together by all of us. That made us feel important for the project since we all left a part of us in either the decorations, games, pop-up stand, city parade or art installation.
Personally, I enjoyed this experience very much since I had the opportunity to challenge myself. I have learnt that I can share the same space and time with nine other people from different countries and backgrounds without letting our differences cause trouble in our everyday life. I have improved my communication and organizational skills; and I have managed to be more assertive and open. I am very grateful that I, and the other volunteers in the project, had been given a chance to meet and understand such a beautiful and interesting culture group. Taking part in this project has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to grow a little bit more as a person.
